“Privilege”
This started as a reply to something but I changed my mind.
To me we should not be using privilege as an insult or attempt to end a conversation. If you disagree with me calling me a straight white male (able-bodied, cis, whatever else gets dragged in.) is not only wrong but it’s racist, sexist and homophobic. Being part of a race, gender or sexuality doesn’t render us all hiveminds. We can disagree and it doesn’t automatically shift us to another group. It’s insulting to try to place a gender, race, and sexuality on someone because of an opinion. What if that person is not ANY of those labels. You’re essentially trying to erase who they are because you disagree with them.
On the flip side if someone agrees with you now they can carry the labels of PoC, LBGT, and/or Non-male, even if they aren’t? Honorary Victim-hood of sorts?
Seriously even if we all agree on some thing we can disagree on other things. That’s why there’s so many little subgroups of practically everything. One group of a village leaves because they don’t like how their town is run. Religious groups break of from parent groups because they interpret something differently. Feminist groups break off from greater feminism because they disagree with something. It’s kinda how culture evolves.
This isn’t going to stop anyone, of course. This is just how I feel about it. The minute someone accuses me of being a straight white male I know they don’t want to discuss anything they want to “prove” to everyone else that they are right. I can’t possibly talk after than accusation. Even if try to tell them they are wrong I’m lying because I have to be those things in order for their narrow little view to remain in tact.
